WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 20) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Chatham for its home opener on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets broke open a scoreless tie in the second half and held on for a 1-0 victory in a chippy Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown.
After the two conference rivals played to a 0-0 tie at halftime, sophomore
Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) took a feed from junior
Jacob Nicholas (Chambersburg, Pa. / Shalom Christian Academy) and beat the Chatham (0-2, 0-2) keeper for the eventual game-winning tally in the 57
th minute.
That score was enough for Waynesburg (1-1, 1-1) senior goalkeeper
Adam Dolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny), who logged his first shutout of the season. Dolan denied all four shots that the Cougars put on goal over 90 minutes in goal.
Saturday' victory was a physical triumph for the Jackets. The two teams combined for 32 fouls, four yellow cards and a red card against Chatham.
After putting up just one shot on goal over the first 45 minutes, Waynesburg cranked up the offensive pressure with six tries on net. Freshman
Logan Gonzalez (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk) logged two of those shots on goal as part of a four-shot afternoon.
Waynesburg will look to keep its winning ways going on Saturday. March 27, when Bethany makes the trip to John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
