WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 20) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Lancaster Bible College on Monday for a rare weekday afternoon contest. After building a 2-0 lead late in the contest, Waynesburg saw the Chargers score three goals in less than three minutes to pull off a shocking 3-2 win.
After a scoreless first half, Waynesburg (1-5) opened the scoring with a goal in the 49
th minute that came courtesy of senior
Daniel Hott (Cumberland, Md. / Fort Hill). Sophomore
Tyler Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) set up the go-ahead tally. Just over 20 minutes later, Hott set up sophomore
Ben White (Bluefield, W.Va. / Graham) for an insurance goal that seemed to all but spell victory for the host squad.
Early in the 84
th minute, Lancaster Bible (4-1-1) broke up the shutout. Exactly one minute later, the visiting squad tied things up at 2-2 and the game seemed destined to go to overtime. However, early in the 88
th minutes, LBC completed the unbelievable comeback and stunned the crowd at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) played a masterful 84 minutes before giving up the three goals. The first-year keeper tallied 12 of his 13 saves before the game-deciding scores found the back of the net.
Waynesburg kept itself in position to win, despite being outshot by a 26-10 margin and a 16-7 difference in shots on goal. The Jackets also stood up to a physical Lancaster Bible squad that committed 14 fouls.
Waynesburg will try to bounce back from Monday's disappointment on Saturday, Sept. 25, when it hosts Marymount. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
