WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 25) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Marymount University on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets fell behind 4-1 at halftime, but rebounded for a solid second half. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to lead to a victory, as the visiting Saints left town with a 5-3 triumph.
Â
Marymount (4-4-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, but just 26 seconds later, freshman
Seth Massotti (Douglass, Mass / Whitinsville Christian) tied things up at 1-1 on an unassisted tally. Unfortunately, the final three goals of the opening period went to the Saints, who took a 4-1 lead into the break.
Â
After the Saints extended their lead to 5-1 early in the second half, Massotti completed the biggest day in his young Waynesburg career by tallying both Jacket (1-6) goals in the second half. His first came in the 65
th minute, and his second found the back of the net just over four minutes later. Momentum had clearly swung to the home team by this point. However, the Jackets were unable to turn that momentum into a fourth and fifth score.
Â
Freshman goalkeeperÂ
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) played all 90 minutes in net and played much better than the final score gave him credit for. Among his eight saves were multiple stops on a Marymount breakaway opportunities.Â
Â
Waynesburg will look to bounce back from the defeat when PAC play starts on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Franciscan for a 5 p.m. match with the Barons.
