STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 29) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team made the trip to Franciscan on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest with the host Barons. Franciscan built a 2-0 halftime lead and never looked back as it picked up a 5-2 win.
The Jackets (1-7, 0-1) cut their two-goal deficit in half, when freshman
Seth Massotti (Douglass, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) scored his fourth goal in two games off a penalty kick late in the 51
st minute. Franciscan (4-3, 1-0) answered Waynesburg's challenge with a tally in the 58
th minute to rebuild a multi-goal advantage at 3-1.
Sophomore
Logan Corradi (Darlington, Pa. / Blackhawk) put Waynesburg right back into contention for a win in its conference opener when he found the back of the net roughly five minutes later for his third goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold put a win out of reach for the visiting squad with goals in the 71
st and 79
th minutes.
After being outshot 15-6 in the first half, the Jackets turned the tables on the Barons by outshooting them 17-8 over the final 45 minutes. Corner kicks followed a similar pattern. After the two teams each tried three times from the corner flags in the opening period, Waynesburg dominated that statistical category to the tune of a 6-1 advantage in the second half.
Freshman
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves.
Waynesburg returns home on Saturday, Oct. 2, for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match against Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
