WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 8) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team welcomed 11 other schools to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse when it hosted its 10th annual home invitational on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets finished ninth out of a dozen squads and saw three of their own finish in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Junior heavyweight Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) led the charge for the Jackets by finishing second at 285 pounds. McGeary won his opening match by major decision before pinning his way into the championship semifinals. The former Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and regional champion earned a spot in the title tilt with a 5-1 decision over an opponent from NCAA Division II member Fairmont State. Unfortunately, McGeary came up one win shy of his first individual championship of the season.

Freshman Damion Finnegan (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) put together perhaps his best showing of his first collegiate season by taking third at 133 pounds. After an 11-5 overtime win to start his run, Finnegan was dropped into consolations. After suffering defeat, Finnegan came back with back-to-back decisions to close out his 3-1 day.

Another Waynesburg freshman, Seth Evans (Sharon, Pa. / Sharon), placed fifth in the 157-pound weight class. Evans won his opener by decision, but dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 final score in the quarterfinals. He bounced back with back-to-back first-period pins to reach the consolation semifinals, but was denied a spot in the third-place bout. Evans closed the tournament on a high note with a 9-6 win in the fifth-place match.

First-year sophomore heavyweight Trent Patrick (Delmont, Pa. / Greensburg Salem) posted a 2-2 day for the Yellow Jackets that included a pin in overtime after dropping into consolations.

Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 15, when it takes part in the Wil Abele Invitational, which is hosted by Ursinus College.
