WILLIAMSPORTS, Pa. (Feb. 26) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team wrapped up the 2021-22 season at the two-day NCAA Division III Southeast Regional Championships, which were hosted by Lycoming over the past two days. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) who came one away from qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships.
McGeary got off to a great start at the event by stringing together an 11-0 major decision in his first match and a pin in the quarterfinal round to reach the semifinals against the third seed. After falling behind, McGeary rebounded to tie the bout at 4-4 and send it into overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory period, McGeary gave up an escape point in the first ride out period, but couldn't respond in kind and dropped the contest 5-4.
Unfortunately, his season came to an end in similar fashion in the consolations semifinals, where he fell 5-4. He took a medical forfeit in the fifth place match to take sixth for the event.
Freshman 141-pounder
Damion Finnegan (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) logged a pin in his first trip to the regional championships.
