Men's soccer tussles with PSU Behrend at Mt. Union Invitational

Waynesburg drops 3-1 contest to Lions; Will face Defiance in day two

ALLIANCE, Ohio (Sept. 10) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team squared off with Penn State Behrend during the first day of the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets struck first, but the Lions answered with the final three tallies of the contest to take the game 3-1.

Senior Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) put Waynesburg (2-2) on the board in the ninth minute with his second goal of the year. Three minutes later, Behrend (1-0-2) got the equalizer to knot things up at 1-1, which was also the score when the two teams broke for halftime.

After the two squads returned from their respective locker rooms, the Lions tallied the eventual game-winning goal 8:54 into the second half. Waynesburg stayed within striking distance of tying the game back up throughout most of the final 45 minutes. However, Behrend tacked on its third-and-final goal of the game in the 86th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) started and made nine saves over 90 minutes in net.

The Jackets are back in action today for day two of the Mount Union Invitational. Waynesburg faces Defiance at 2 p.m.
