ALLIANCE, Ohio (Sept. 10) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team squared off with Penn State Behrend during the first day of the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets struck first, but the Lions answered with the final three tallies of the contest to take the game 3-1.
Senior
Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) put Waynesburg (2-2) on the board in the ninth minute with his second goal of the year. Three minutes later, Behrend (1-0-2) got the equalizer to knot things up at 1-1, which was also the score when the two teams broke for halftime.
After the two squads returned from their respective locker rooms, the Lions tallied the eventual game-winning goal 8:54 into the second half. Waynesburg stayed within striking distance of tying the game back up throughout most of the final 45 minutes. However, Behrend tacked on its third-and-final goal of the game in the 86
th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) started and made nine saves over 90 minutes in net.
The Jackets are back in action today for day two of the Mount Union Invitational. Waynesburg faces Defiance at 2 p.m.
