DEFIANCE, Ohio (Sept. 11) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team wrapped up its two-day run at this weekend's Mount Union Invitational by facing Defiance in the consolation game on Sunday. The Orange and Black scored first, but couldn't hold the slim lead as it settled for a 1-1 tie in a battle of the Yellow Jackets.
Waynesburg (2-2-1) freshman
Taylor McFarland (Wheeling, W.Va. / Wheeling) scored the second goal of his young collegiate career 8:26 into the contest. Junior
Alex White (Bluefield, W.Va. / Graham) posted his team-best third assist of the season to set up the go-ahead score. White's three helpers have him tied for the top spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
The Jackets made their 1-0 lead hold up through halftime and five minutes into the second period, before Defiance (0-1-3) tallied the equalizer with 40 minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, Waynesburg was unable to rediscover its scoring touch. Luckily, the Waynesburg defense teamed up with sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) to deny Defiance a game winner of its own.
Francus racked up eight saves over 90 minutes in goal. He is now averaging 6.4 saves per game, which is the second-highest average in the PAC.
After the conclusion of the Mount Union Invitational, senior
Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) and junior
Logan Gonzalez (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk) were named to the all-tournament team.
Waynesburg returns to competition on Wednesday, Sept. 14, with a home game against Pitt Greensburg. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
