WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 3) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Penn State Altoona for its home opener on Saturday. After an evenly played first half, the Yellow Jackets were able to tilt the field in their favor over the final 45 minutes and tally the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory.
Though Waynesburg (1-1) held a 12-6 advantage in total shots in the opening period, the Yellow Jackets held a slimmer 5-3 edge in shots on goal. In the second half, the Jackets peppered the opposing net with 14 shots, 10 of which were on goal. One of those attempts, which came in the 69
th minute, came off the foot of freshman
Luke Griffith (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) and proved to be the winning tally.
Waynesburg held massive advantages in total shots (26-11), shots on goal (15-5) and corner kicks (12-2) as it logged its first win of the 2022 campaign. The physically charged contest also saw a combined nine yellow cards handed out, six of which went against Penn State Altoona (0-1).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) earned his first shutout of the fall by stopping all five opposing shots put on goal.
The Jackets are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 8, when they travel to La Roche. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
