PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 8) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team traveled to La Roche for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The Yellow Jackets controlled the game from start to finish as they rolled to a 5-0 victory.
Waynesburg (2-1) got the eventual game-winning goal 2:05 into the event thanks to junior
Logan Gonzalez (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk), who took a feed from classmate
Tyler Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) and found the back of the net on his team's first shot of the game. Roughly 12:30 later, freshman
Taylor McFarland (Wheeling, W.Va. / Wheeling Park) doubled the Yellow Jacket advantage. Sophomore
Seth Massotti (Douglass, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) tallied the helper on the score.
Junior
Ben White (Bluefield, W.Va. / Graham) grew his team's advantage to 3-0 thanks to an unassisted goal in the 26
th minute. The Jacket offense cooled off over the first period's final 18-plus minutes, as they went into the break still up by three.
Mohrbacher reignited the attack early in the 56
th minute with his first of the night. White posted his third point of the game with the assist. Senior
Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) put the finishing touches on a satisfying Waynesburg win by taking a feed from junior
Alex White (Bluefield, W. Va. / Graham) and putting it past the opposing keeper late in the 65
th minutes.
Not surprisingly, the Orange and Black dominated La Roche in terms of total shots (18-5) and shots on goal (14-3). Somewhat surprisingly, the Redhawks.(0-2-1) held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, with all their tries from the corner coming in the final 45 minutes of play.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) picked up his second win of the season in net after starting and making two saves over the first 45:53 of play. Freshman
Clayton James (Silver Spring, Md. / St. John's College High School) made his collegiate debut in net and tallied his first save over 44:07 of work.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they face Penn State Behrend at the Mount Union Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
