WASHINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 4) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team traveled to Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The two teams locked horns in a back-and-forth contest and by the time the dust settled, it was W&J that came away with a 4-3 win.
It didn't take long for the scoring to get going, as the Presidents (3-4-3, 2-1-2) found the back of the net just 4:17 into the contest. Waynesburg (6-4, 3-2) tied the game at 1-1 thanks to the efforts of senior
Tyler Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom), who logged his third goal in two games, this one coming late in the 16
th minute of play.
Just 21 seconds later, the Jackets took their first lead of the evening when junior
Seth Massotti (Douglass, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) posted an unassisted tally that made the score 2-1. The lead lasted for 4:37, before the Presidents tied the score at 2-2, which was also the count as the two teams broke for halftime.
Just under four minutes into the second half, the Jackets regained the advantage thanks to freshman
Vincent Palmeri (Edgewater, Md. / The Key School), who found the back of the net late in the 49
th minute.
Once again, the host squad had a quick answer to Waynesburg's challenge, as W&J tied the game at 3-3 in the 50
th minute. The Presidents added the game winner midway through the 60
th minute and were able to ward off the Jackets' attempts to tie the score back up.
Not surprisingly, shots, shots on goal and fouls were almost even between the two schools. The Jackets held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, however.
Junior
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) started and played all 90 minutes in goal. He logged seven saves on the evening.
Waynesburg returns to competition on Saturday, Oct. 7, with a road trip to Allegheny. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
