LAST TIME OUT
Both teams are opening the 2023 season on Saturday. Waynesburg posted a 4-6 overall record in 2022 that included a 3-5 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition. Allegheny, which returned to the PAC last season after a 38-year hiatus, went 3-7 in its return to the league. The Gators went 2-6 against the conference, with one of those victories coming against Waynesburg.
Â
LAST TIME THEY MET
After a scoreless first quarter, Allegheny built a 10-0 lead in the second, before taking a 19-7 advantage going into halftime. The Gators grew their lead to 25-7 in the third, before Waynesburg cut its deficit to 25-15. A touchdown late in the third quarter brought about the final score of 31-15. Running back
Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) led the Orange and Black offense with 86 yards rushing and both touchdowns on 17 carries. Wide receiver
Dakota Romantino (Charleroi, Pa. / Charleroi) reeled in five catches for a game-high 80 yards. Allegheny was led by running back Tre Worship, who piled up 201 yards and a pair of scores on 22 totes.
Â
KEEP AN EYE ON
Sophomore quarterback
Thomas Burke III (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) is expected to get the start at quarterback following the graduation of last year's starter
Tyler Raines. Classmate
Kerry Burns, Jr. (Washington, D.C. / Theodore Roosevelt) and junior
Samuel Barber (Johnstown, Pa. / Greater Johnstown), a transfer from Division II Lock Haven, have also been in the running for the job in training camp.
Â
NEWS AND NOTES
The Waynesburg defense will have a very different look to it in 2023. The unit is expected to feature nine new starters from a year ago, four of which are scholarship transfers. Conversely, the Yellow Jacket offense features six returning starters and multiple others on the two-deep that saw significant field time this past fall.
Â
Flack enters the 2023 season in fourth place on Waynesburg's career rushing list. He currently stands 1,266 yards shy of Ryan Abels' (2003-06) top mark of 3,985 yards. However, he is just 101 yards shy of tying Tim Miller (1987-90) for third place.
Â
Romantino needs 928 yards to pass Ivan Hawkins (2002-05) for first place in Waynesburg's all-time receiving yardage list.
Â
Waynesburg will try to win back-to-back season openers for the first time since the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Last year, the Yellow Jackets rolled 52-14 over Gallaudet, which qualified for the 2022 NCAA Division III national tournament.
