WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 23) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team battled Chatham at a cold, rainy John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday night. Led by freshman
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic), the Yellow Jackets never trailed against the Cougars on their way to a 3-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory.
Johnson opened the scoring at the end of the fifth minute with his team-leading fourth goal of the fall. Junior
Seth Massotti (Douglass, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) set up the tally with his squad-best third assist of the season.
The same duo hooked up again for the eventual game-winning point in the 18
th minute. Johnson ended the night with five goals, while Massotti logged his fourth helper of 2023.
Chatham (1-7-1, 0-2) got on the board in the 30
th minute, but another Waynesburg (4-3, 1-1) freshman,
Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton), restored his team's two-goal advantage with an unassisted tally in the 39
th minute.
After an offense-filled first half, neither team was able to score over the final 45 minutes.
The Jackets picked up the victory despite being outshot 20-12 by Chatham. Waynesburg was more efficient with its attempts, as seven Jacket shots were put on goal, to five for the Cougars. The Orange and Black also held a major advantage (10-2) in corner kicks.
Junior
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) earned the win in goal after making four saves over 90 minutes in net.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when it hosts Saint Vincent for another PAC victory. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
