Men's soccer tallies 5-0 shutout of Penn State Beaver

Four different Jackets score and defense pitches a shutout as Waynesburg improves to 2-0

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 4) – Four different Yellow Jackets scored and the defense pitched a shutout as Waynesburg produced a 5-0 victory over visiting Penn State Beaver. The win gave the Orange and Black its first 2-0 start since 2013.

The scoring started with a goal in the sixth minute from Jacket (2-0) freshman Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wooton). Waynesburg doubled its advantage in the 17th minute thanks to junior Seth Massotti's (Douglass, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) first of 2023.

Just over 10 minutes later, freshman Zachary Johnston (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) logged his first collegiate score off an assist from Massotti. Waynesburg took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break and was well on its way to the victory.

Yet another Waynesburg newcomer, freshman Braden Esbenshade (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Mount Calvary), recorded his first collegiate goal, which occurred in the 53rd minute. The game's final point tally came near the end of the 59th minute, when Serrano completed his first multi-goal effort as a Jacket. Sophomore Beau Hawkins (Great Mills, Md. / Great Mills) logged his first collegiate point when he assisted on the score.

The Jackets out-shot the Lions (0-2) 33-7 and bested Penn State Beaver 14-4 in shots on goal. The Jackets attempted nine corner kicks, while not giving up any to the Lions.

Junior Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) started in goal and improved his season record to 2-0 after making one save over 45 minutes in net. Sophomore Andrew Price (Fountainville, Pa. / Plumstead Christian) worked the second half and logged three saves during his first action of the fall.

The Jackets will try for a 3-0 start to the year when they travel to Penn State Altoona on Saturday, Sept. 9. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
