Men’s Soccer bounces back with 7-1 win at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. (October 9) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team got back in the win column with a 7-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win at Thiel on Wednesday evening.

Waynesburg rises to 7-3-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in league play. Thiel drops to 6-4-1, 1-3 PAC.

The Jackets scored three goals in the first half hour of play, led 4-1 at halftime and tallied three second half goals.

Seth Massotti (Douglas, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) tied Waynesburg's single-season assists record as he fed Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) in the 20th minute to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead. It was Massotti's eighth assist of 2024, matching David Peters' mark set in 2004.

Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) converted a penalty kick goal in 23rd minute to collect his eighth tally this season.

Nick Bryan (Olathe, Kan. / Blue Valley Southwest) struck in the 27th minute off a pass from Josh Smith (Dover, Ohio / Dover) and Michael Kanu (Columbus, Ohio / Tree of Life Christian) set up Braden Esbenshade (Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Calvary) in the 37th to put Waynesburg ahead 4-1 going into the half.

Taylor McFarland (Wheeling, W. Va. / Wheeling Park) starting the scoring in the second half in the 58th minute with Smith collecting another assist. Smith then got in on the action with a goal a minute later to put the Jackets ahead 6-1.

Kanu snuck behind the Thiel back line in and scored in the 73rd minute. 

Waynesburg took 13 shots, 12 on goal and had seven different players find the back of the net.

Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) made five saves in the win.

The Jackets head to Saint Vincent on Saturday.
