MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (November 17) – The Waynesburg University women's wrestling team had two fifth-place finishers at the Millersville Women's Collegiate Open on Sunday.
For Waynesburg, the Jackets made program history with the first two individuals win multiple matches to secure top-six placement at a tournament. Waynesburg also saw its first three wins via fall in team history.
Ja'Khia Matthews (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) won three matches, two by pinfall to record a fifth-place finish in the 207-pound bracket. She pinned her first opponent in 1:19 to advance to the 207 quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Matthews notched another pin in 1:00 flat to reach the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, she earned a 10-1 victory.
Faryn Dewitt (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland) turned in a 2-2 day to finish fifth in the 110-pound bracket. She recorded 2-0 decision in her first match to advance to the championship semifinals. She was defeated by the bracket runner-up in the 110 semifinals and by the eventual third-place finisher in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Dewitt recorded a pin in 3:53.
Melanie Matherson (Fort Cherry, Pa. / Fort Cherry) was narrowly defeated in her opening match, 7-5 with Muhlenberg's Penelope Schneider scoring the deciding points with 32 seconds left in the bout. She ran into the bracket's third-place finisher in the consolation bracket and was pinned.
Waynesburg competes at the John Carroll Women's Duals next Sunday.
