FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. (Feb. 21) – The Waynesburg University women's wrestling team wrapped up the 2025-26 season at day two of the NCAA Women's Region III Championships, which were hosted by Emmanuel University. Freshman
Anastasia Curitti (Fernley, Nev. / Coral Academy of Science) and sophomore
Ja'Khia Matthews (Phoenix, Ariz. / Albermarle) represented Waynesburg as they battled in consolations for a spot in the national championship tournament.
Though neither of the young grapplers were able to punch a ticket to nationals with a third-place finish, they made program history by earning the first two regional medals in the program's young history. Curitti took fifth at 124 pounds, while Matthews finished sixth at 207 pounds.
Curitti was defeated in the consolation semifinals to open her Saturday and moved into the fifth-place bout, which she won by forfeit.
Matthews needed just 51 seconds to pin McDaniel's Kayla Carter and advance into the consolation semifinals. The second-year standout looked poised to punch her ticket to the bronze medal match by building a 5-2 lead against Randolph's LJ Peters after one period. That advantage grew to 7-2 early in the second and with just under 30 seconds left on the clock, Matthews was holding on to a 9-6 edge. Unfortunately, she was taken down and pinned with 24 seconds remaining in the contest. That loss dropped her into the fifth-place bout.
Waynesburg finished 14
th in the 18-team field with 25 points. National powerhouse Presbyterian took home the team title with 181.5 points.
