Women's wrestling to host series of fall training clinics

Yellow Jackets welcoming young grapplers to campus every Sunday in September

8/12/2026 7:59:00 AM

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Aug. 12) – First-year Waynesburg University women's head wrestling coach Leilah Castro is excited to announce a series of fall training clinics in September. Castro will welcome outstanding young female grapplers entering grades six to 12 to town every Sunday evening next month.

The sessions will be held on Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Waynesburg wrestling room. Each one will focus on technique, situational wrestling, live wrestling, wrestling IQ, mental toughness and fun on the mat. All campers will also receive advice on college coaching and recruiting, before a nightly Q&A session.

Each session costs $35 per camper, with a reduced price for a four-session package of $120 per camper. Pre-registration is highly encouraged, and can be done by going to this link: Registration link.

As an assistant coach at Otterbein, she helped develop a 2025 national champion and four other national qualifiers. A year later, she coached a 2026 national qualifier and four regional medalists.

Coach Castro brings an impressive competitive resume with her in her first season with the Yellow Jackets that includes being an NAIA national runner-up and part of back-to-back NAIA national championship teams while competing at Campbellsville.

An Ohio native, Castro produced a highly decorated career on the mats at New Lexington High School. Not only did she win the 121-pound championship at the inaugural Ohio Girls State Wrestling Tournament in 2020, but she pinned all five opponents she faced on her way to the crown and was lauded as the Toccara Montgomery Most Outstanding Wrestler Award by the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

Castro has also made a name for herself on the international stage. She was not only a member of the 2018 U.S. Women's Freestyle Cadet Word Team, but she went 3-2 with a pin and a win by technical superiority on her way to a fifth-place showing.
