EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (November 3) – The Waynesburg University women's wrestling team participated in its first-ever competition at the East Stroudsburg University Women's Open on Sunday. Freshman
Faryn Dewitt (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland) earned the program's first-ever victory by decision at 110 pounds.
Waynesburg had three wrestlers competing in the season-opening invitational at ESU. The event featured teams from NCAA Division I, II and III and included six teams that were featured in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Women's NCAA Women's Wrestling Preseason Poll, including No. 1 King, No. 8 Sacred Heart and No. 9 Elmira.
Dewitt drew a bye to round of 16 in the 110 bracket and was sent to the consolation bracket by No. 4 seed Lauren Nguyen of Sacred Heart via fall. Dewitt scored the first Yellow Jacket women's wrestling victory with a 9-6 decision over Cedar Crest's Leilani Martinez. Dewitt's day ended at 1-2 after bowing out against another wrestler from Sacred Heart.
Waynesburg was also represented by freshmen
Melanie Matherson (Fort Cherry, Pa. / Fort Cherry) and
Ja'Khia Matthews (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle).
Matherson entered the 145-pound weight class and drew defending NCWWC national runner-up and U23 Pan American gold medalist Anie Drury of King University. Drury took a 10-0 decision to send Matherson to the consolation bracket. Matherson fell to Lincoln Memorial's Stephanie Castro in the first period.
Mattews competed in the 207 bracket. She was pinned late in the first period in her collegiate debut against York's Emma Lavalle. In the consolation bracket, Matthews was matched with third-seeded Christina Chavez of Gannon and was defeated by fall.
Waynesburg heads to the Millersville Open on Nov. 17.
