BEREA, Ohio (Feb. 3) -- The Waynesburg University wrestling team placed 9th out of 13 teams at the 37th John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace on Saturday at the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.
Freshman
Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) placed fourth at 184 pounds. He had a first-round bye and was defeated 15-0 inj. by Kyle De Moss (Otterbein) in the second round.
Orbin worked his way through the consolation bracket with an 11-0 major decision over Omari Watson (Wilkes). In a rematch with De Moss, the freshman standout emerged victorious with a 10-4 decision and advanced to the third-place bout with an 8-6 decision over Gary Steele (Otterbein). Orbin's day came to an end as he medically forfeited his final matchup to finish in fourth.
At 149 pounds, freshman
Cole Homet (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) won his first-round bout over Benjamin Lloyd (Alfred State) with a 19-2 technical fall and downed Austin Parker (Thiel) in round two with a pin (0:49).Â
Homet dropped his third bout of the day to the no.1 nationally ranked 149-pounder, Michael Petrella (Baldwin Wallace), on a 17-1 technical fall.
In the consolation bracket, Homet picked up a 20-4 tech. fall over Alexander Johnson (Alfred State), a 12-0 major decision win over Joseph Scott (Baldwin Wallace) and lost by default to Colton Thorpe (Wilkes) in the fifth-place bout.
Jacob Wilson (Wills Point, Texas / Princeton) started his day with a pin (1:21) over Andrew Mushkin (Ohio Wesleyan). Wilson was defeated by a 16-9 decision from Jeremy Devine (St. John Fisher) in the second round.
Wilson picked an 18-9 major decision over Carson Wells (Wilkes) and a medical forfeit win over Declan Jewitt (Otterbein) in the consolation rounds. In a rematch with Devine, he dropped an 8-3 decision. Wilson ended his day with a medical forfeit win over Dominic Hartman (Thiel) to claim seventh place.
After dropping his opening bout,
Ayden Bishoff (Kingwood, W.Va. / Preston) picked up a pair of wins at 197 pounds in the consolation bracket. He notched a 21-6 tech. fall over Howard Congdon (Thiel) and a pin (5:51) on Nathan Rourke (St. John Fisher).
Jarvis Thomas (Rex, Ga. / Mount Zion) dropped his first bout at 157 pounds but picked up a 17-1 tech. fall over Dylan Specht (St. John Fisher) and 20-4 tech. fall over teammate
Brayden Barbao (Donora, Pa. / Ringold).
Also at 157,
Seth Evans (Sharon, Pa. / Sharon) scored a hard fought 4-3 decision over Justin Ritchie (Baldwin Wallace).
The Yellow Jackets return to the mat next Saturday, February 10, for a 1 p.m. non-conference dual with Muskingum University.
