PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 17) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team rolled to a 8-0 victory over Carlow at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jackets returned to the win column and move to 3-2 on the year while Carlow falls to 2-3.
The Jackets continued a trend of early goals as they found the back of the net three times in the first 20 minutes of play. Waynesburg has scored six goals in the first 20 minutes of play over the last three games.
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) notched his first goal of the season in the game's 12th minute.
Seth Massotti (Douglas, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) sent a corner kick into the penalty area where Johnson overpowered the Carlow keeper, who got a hand on the shot, from straight on to give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later the Jackets tallied another goal.
Connor Jacobs (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) landed his first tally of the season in the 14th minute with a header from Massotti.
Johnson bodied in another goal off a corner kick in the 18th minute with
Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) inserting the corner and collecting the assist to put Waynesburg ahead 3-0.
Aidan Groves (Hampstead, Md. / Delone Catholic) scored his first goal as a Yellow Jacket in the 31st minute. Following a short corner kick, Massotti found Grove at the top of the penalty area, who aimed a shot inside the right post to grove the Jacket lead to 4-0.
An own goal in the 37th minute gave the Jackets a 5-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Mason Lewis (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township),
Henry Hawkins I(Great Mills, Md. / Great Mills) and Serrano scored in the 63rd, 76th and 79th minutes as Waynesburg cruised to the 8-0 victory.
Massotti set Waynesburg's single-game assists record with three, all in the first half of play. Johnson scored twice and Serrano had a goal and two assists. Hawkins had a goal and an assist in the second half.
Waynesburg outshot Carlow 34-5 (18-2 SOG) and had a 17-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) and
Zach Reed (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton La Salle) split the shutout in net as each keeper recorded one save.
The Jackets host Lancaster Bible on Saturday at 6 p.m.
