WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 25) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team tallied four second half goals en route to a 5-3 win over Westminster in the Jackets' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Jackets rise to 5-2 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Westminster falls to 3-3-2, 0-1 PAC. The win marks the first time since 2003 that the Jackets have won consecutive games against Westminster.
Westminster scored back-to-back goals in the 64th and 65th minutes to take a 3-2 lead with 25 minutes left in regulation.
Freshman
Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) blasted a game-tying goal in the 67th minute from long range into the upper-left corner. Fellow freshman
Josh Smith (Dover, Ohio / Dover) gave the Jackets the lead in the 73rd as he collected a deflection just beyond the six-yard box, settled and roofed a shot to give the Jackets a 4-3 edge.
Kwabiah put the game away in the 86th minute as he took a feed from
Seth Massotti (Douglas, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) and, after a touch, ripped a shot into the top opposite corner to bring the margin to the final score of 5-3.
Waynesburg continued its trend of early tallies as
Mason Lewis (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) scored in the game's fifth minute off a drop-off by
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic). The Jackets carried that 1-0 lead into the half.
Westminster scored in the opening minute of the second half to knot the game at one. Johnson responded a minute later by taking the ball from midfield into the penalty area and beating the Westminster keeper to give the Jackets a 2-1 edge.
About 15 minutes into the second half, Westminster's goalie saved a shot off the goal line and Waynesburg's back line responded with a defensive save soon after. The Titans took their brief 3-2 lead in the 65th before Waynesburg's freshmen provided their heroics.
Waynesburg outshot Westminster 20-14 (10-6 SOG) on the night and had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Waynesburg continues conference play at Bethany on Saturday afternoon.
