Men’s Soccer blanks Bethany in PAC win

BETHANY, W. Va. (September 28) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team secured a 3-0 win at Bethany in the Jackets' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road opener on Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg rises to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in PAC play. Bethany remains winless at 0-8, 0-2 PAC.

The Jackets tallied a goal in the opening 10 minutes of play for the fifth time this season as Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) finished a cross from Seth Massotti (Douglas, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) with a header inside the left post. His redirection gave the Jackets a 1-0 lead in the game's 10th minute.

A Bethany miscue led to Waynesburg's second tally of the first half in the 33rd minute. The Jackets booted a ball into the final third in the direction of Michael Kanu (Columbus, Ohio / Tree of Life Christian). A Bison defender sent an angled pass back towards the Bethany goalkeeper and the ball ended up in the back of the net to give Waynesburg a 2-0 edge going into halftime.

Waynesburg hit the crossbar in the 56th minute and the right post four minutes later. Josh Smith (Dover, Ohio / Dover) put a pair of shots on target in the 64th and 66th minutes but both attempts were saved.

Kanu cashed in with an insurance goal in the 77th minute. The Jackets booted a free kick from their own end off the field into their attacking third. Massotti flicked the ball ahead into the 18-yard box where Kanu beat the keeper to the ball with a sliding shot to bring the score line to its final count of 3-0.

Waynesburg held an 18-17 edge in shots (7-5 SOG) and recorded seven of the game's nine corners.

With two assists, Massotti moved into second place in program history with 17 career assists. He is the only player to have multiple assists in three games as a Yellow Jacket.

Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) made five saves in the shutout win.

The Jackets host Allegheny on Wednesday evening.
