Women’s Wrestling hosts Buffalo State and Bethany in first-ever home match

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 16) – The Waynesburg University women's wrestling team hosted its inaugural home event as the Yellow Jackets welcomed Buffalo State and Bethany for a tri-match.

The Jackets fell 30-10 against the Bengals in the opening match and were defeated 40-10 by the Bison in the finale.

Faryn Dewitt (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland), Kaylee Jegla (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse High School North) and Ja'Khia Matthews (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) each notched pins at their respective weight classes on the day.

Dewitt went 2-0 at 110 pounds. She collected a pin in 1:07 against Buffalo State and a forfeit versus Bethany.

Jegla recorded her first-ever on-match victory and first career pin. She won by fall in 58 seconds against Bethany's Madison Szymanowski.

Matthews and Buffalo State's Diamond Martin had the top bout of the first match, going deep into the second period before Martin pulled out the win by fall. Matthews posted a pin in 29 seconds in the nightcap.

Mickayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii. / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama), Melanie Matherson (Fort Cherry, Pa. / Fort Cherry) and Rylie Alexander (Mount Clemens, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse High School North) each competed for the Jackets in their first-ever event in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg travels to East Stroudsburg to compete in the Pennsylvania Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships on Jan. 26.
