Men's soccer battles Saint Vincent to 1-1 draw on senior day

Engel's late goal leads to tie with Bearcats

WAYNESBURG, Pa., (Oct. 11) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie on Saturday night against Saint Vincent at John F. Wiley Stadium. The draw came shortly after celebrating senior night.

The first 25 minutes of the game saw both offenses trying to find their footing. The Yellow Jackets (7-4-1, 2-2-1) produced three shorts in that timespan, while the Bearcats (9-2-2, 3-1-1) attempted four.

In the 26th minute, it looked like the Jackets finally broke through the Bearcats' defense when junior Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) scored what seemed to be the go-ahead goal. However, the goal was waived off due to a handball by Johnson.

That was as close as either side game to breaking up the shutout in the first 45 minutes, and the two conference rivals went to halftime tied 0-0.

The Bearcats lit up the scoreboard in the 65th minute to take the first lead of the night.
.
In the 73rd minute, senior Nick Bryan (Olathe, Kan. / Blue Valley Southwest) had a chance at a game-tying goal. The Bearcat goalie dove right to save a shot from the corner, leaving Bryan with an open left side of the net. Unfortunately, the attempt sailed wide and Saint Vincent kept its lead.

However, momentum seemed to be turning in the home team's favor, and the offense finally broke through, as Bryan played a cross to freshman John Engel (Dallas, Ga. / East Paulding). He proceeded to fire a volley straight through the goalie's outstretched arms to tie the game and bring about the eventual final score.

The Bearcats led in the shot category 12-10 (6-6 SOG). They also led in corner kicks 9-2.

Waynesburg returns to John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday, with a home game against Chatham. Start time for the PAC clash is scheduled for 6 p.m.
