WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 15) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to pull out a 2-2 draw against Chatham on Wednesday night. The draw has the Jackets one point out of fourth place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings.
The Cougars (3-7-4, 1-2-3) logged the game's first goal in the fourth minute on an amazingly placed ball in the top left corner of the net. The ball just got past the outstretched arms of Yellow Jacket (7-4-2, 2-2-2) freshman keeper
Deven Patel (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) for the early 1-0 lead.
The Cougars struck again in the 30
th minute, this time with a shot that went off Patel and into the goal.
The Jackets had seven shots in the first half, with three of them being on goal.
Waynesburg put a difficult first half behind it and got on the board with a penalty kick by sophomore
Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade). Kwabiah played some mind games with the goalie when he switched the side he kicked from as he went up to take the shot in the 63
rd minute.
Junior
Braden Esbenshade (Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Calvary) made an amazing effort to tie the game 2-2. After going to the ground in the goal mouth, he was challenged by the goalie and took the shot while on the John F. Wiley Stadium turf. The try caromed off the keeper and found the netting to tie the score with 14:46 left to play.
Waynesburg outshot Chatham 19-15 (9-5 SOG) and led 9-3 in corners kicks.
The Jackets are back in action when they head to Steubenville, Ohio, to take on Franciscan on Saturday. The PAC showdown is scheduled to get started at 4:30 p.m.
