Men's soccer's upset bid comes up just short at Franciscan

Yellow Jackets build 3-0 lead, but settle for 3-3 draw against the Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio. (Oct. 18) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team picked up its third-straight tie at Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest at Franciscan. The Yellow Jackets looked primed to upset the number-two team in the conference, but a rough second half doomed those plans and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

It didn't take long for the Yellow Jackets (8-4-3, 3-2-3) to open the scoring. Junior Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) out-ran the defense to get open for a pass from junior Antonio Baires (San Marcos, Calif. / Calvin Christian) in the 14th minute. Johnson ripped a contested shot off the feed to give his team the 1-0 advantage.

The Jackets found the back of the net again in the 29th minute with junior Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) squeezing it by the Franciscan (8-8, 6-2) keeper for the goal. He was set up by freshman John Engel (Dallas, Ga. / East Paulding) on a crossing pass.

Waynesburg took its 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Barons (8-8, 6-2) had six shots in the first half, with only one of them being on goal, and it was saved by Jacket freshman keeper Deven Patel (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales).

Baires picked up his first collegiate goal in the 49th minute, when he rebounded a blocked shot and put it in the bottom right side of the goal to extend the lead 3-0. Unfortunately, the lead wouldn't last for the visitors.

The Barons were quick to strike back in the second half with a goal of their own in the 53rd minute. They added tallies in the 63rd and 66th minutes to tie the score at 3-3.

Franciscan outshot the Jackets 18-10 and held a slim 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Jackets are on the road once again on Wednesday, when they travel to Hiram for another PAC contest. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
