WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 8) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team defeated Thiel 5-0 on Wednesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. The win snapped a brief two-game losing streak and put the Yellow Jackets into five-way tie for fourth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings.
The Yellow Jackets (7-4-1, 2-2-1) scored in the eighth minute of the game when junior
Mason Lewis (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) sent a shot through multiple defenders for the goal.
This was all the scoring the Jackets had in the first half, as they held Thiel (3-8-1, 0-4-1) to just one shot in the first half.
The Jackets exploded on offense late in the second half. Junior
Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) lifted the ball right over the goalie's outstretched arms for a goal in the 73rd minute. He was assisted by senior
Michael Kanu (Columbus, Ohio / Tree of Life Christian).
Lewis got his second goal of the night off a spectacular cross from sophomore
Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 84th minute.
Junior
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) then picked up two goals within 30 seconds of each other to bring about the final score.
The Jackets outshot the opposition 17-6 (11-2 SOG). They also held a slim 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Next up for the Jackets will be a home PAC contest with Saint Vincent on Saturday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and Waynesburg will be celebrating senior day
