MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's wrestling team traveled East on Sunday to compete in the Millersville Women's Collegiate Open. The Yellow Jackets tied for ninth in the 15-team field.
Sophomore
Ja'Khia Matthews (Phoenix, Ariz. / Albermarle) went 2-2 on the day with a win by fall and another by technical fall at 207 pounds. She won her opener by fall in 51 seconds over Bethany's Zeus Bourassa and followed that by downing Cedar Crest's Lily Decker 10-0 (1:46).
Freshman
Anastasia Curitti (Fernley, Nev. / Coral Academy of Science) also went 2-2 at 117 pounds. She won her first match by pin in 92 seconds over Bluefield State's Paige Altizer. After falling into consolations, Curitti logged her second pin in the day by downing Bluefield State's Maria Gonzalez in 2:41.
Moving up to 124, freshman
Annalie Mejia logged a victory by 13-0 technical fall in 2:21 over Delaware Valley's Isabella LaPerry. At 131, freshman
Haylie Russano (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) bounced back in a big way after dropping her first match of the day. She posted back-to-back falls in consolation over Callisto Banks (1:56) and Sky Hernandez (5:28), both of the University of Bridgeport.
At 138, freshman
Calista Binning (Amelia, Ohio / West Clermont) scored the team's quickest pin of the day by downing Adriana Dias of Cedar Crest in just 38 seconds to open her run. Binning built an 8-4 lead in the quarterfinals but was caught and pinned to fall into consolations. She rebounded with a win by fall in 1:49, before seeing her run in the tournament come to an end.
The Jackets return to the mats on Sunday, Nov. 23, when they compete in the John Carroll Women's Duals. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
