UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio (Nov 2) – The Waynesburg University women's wrestling team opened its second season in program history on Sunday by competing in the John Carroll Round Robin. The Yellow Jackets produced several notable individual performances in the event, which didn't feature any team scoring.

The Jackets were led by sophomore Ja'Khia Matthews (Charlottesville, Va. / Albermale), who took third at 207 pounds. After going 1-1 in pool competition with her first pin of the season, Matthews squared off with Margaret Ann Leach of Bethany. Matthews bested Leach with a pin in 48 seconds to secure Waynesburg's top finish of the day.

Waynesburg logged multiple fourth place finishes as well, with its first coming at 117 pounds. Freshman Anastasia Curitti (Fernley, Nev. / Coral Academy of Science) kicked off her collegiate career with a pin in 17 seconds over an opponent from Ithaca. She followed that with a pair of losses, including one in the bronze medal match.

The Jackets picked up another fourth-place finish at 124 pounds, which came courtesy of freshman Annalie Mejia. Mejia went 3-1 in pool competition with a pair of 10-0 technical fall victories. Her only loss in pool competition came to the eventual champion from Purdue's club team. Unfortunately, Mejia had to settle for fourth.

The Orange and Black featured multiple winners at 131 pounds. Sophomore Melanie Matherson (Fort Cherry, Pa. / Fort Cherry) led the way at the weight with a fifth place showing. Matherson went 2-2 with a pair of pins in pool competition to advance to the fifth-place bout. The second-year Jacket ended the day on a high note by sticking her opponent from Washington & Jefferson in 52 seconds.

Freshman Haylie Russano (Shaler H.S.) picked up her first collegiate win when she pinned her opponent from Heidelberg in 37 seconds as part of a 1-3 run in pool competition. Much like Matherson, Russano finished strong with a pin in her seventh-place match, in which she downed her opponent from John Carroll in 2:29.

Waynesburg saw another of its large freshman class place seventh in the form of Calista Binning (Amelia, Ohio / West Clermont). Wrestling at 138 pounds, Binning couldn't find the winning combination in pool competition, but found her footing in her placement match and pinned her opponent Purdue's club squad in 27 seconds.

The Yellow Jackets return to the mats on Friday, Nov. 7, when they host Penn State Altoona for their home dual match of the season. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
