Waynesburg Track & Field announces summer camps

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (June 9) – Waynesburg University Director of Cross Country and Track Chris Hardie has announced the Yellow Jackets' instructional day camps for the summer. Coach Hardie, the Waynesburg track & field staff and alumni will hold one-day camps in the areas of distance running and throws, concluding with a free distance running forum on July 26.

The camp is open to high school athletes and coaches (coaches will be required to pay the registration fee).  Prior to the conclusion of each day, the coaching staff will share some tips on strength training, diet and hydration.  Optional campus tours are available at the conclusion of each day camp.

July 9    Distance Running Day Camp

Coach Hardie is entering his 21st season at Waynesburg University.  Hardie was selected as conference coach of the year seven times, and has led the cross country team to six conference titles.  Laurel Rush is entering her 18th season as the distance coach at Waynesburg and has had success at the conference and national level.  She has coached dozens of conference champions and five NCAA qualifiers. Participants will go through a typical practice at Waynesburg with a warmup, dynamic warmup, pacing workout specific to your event and a cooldown.  Hardie and Rush will also discuss race strategy, practice strategy, pacing and race prep. *Racing spikes will not be needed.  Cost:  $30 per participant 

July 16    Javelin, Shotput and Discus - Drills and Technique (MORNING SESSION)
10am-11:30am
Waynesburg University Old Gym (parking along W. Wayne Street, Waynesburg PA 15370)

Instructors and Alumni: Megan Sowers and Kevin Thacker 

Coach Hardie is entering his 21st season at Waynesburg University.  The first eight years at Waynesburg, Hardie directed the Jacket throwers and has an impressive resume of NCAA Qualifiers and All-Americans.  Coach Sowers is a three-time NCAA qualifier in the javelin.  Coach Thacker is the throws coach at WU, and helped guide the Jackets to six all-conference performances in 2024-2025.  Participants will walk through a dynamic warmup, med ball exercises and learn some drills and exercises that can be utilized by all three throwing events.  Cost:  $30 per participant.

Coach Hardie is entering his 21st season at Waynesburg University.  The first eight years at Waynesburg, Hardie directed the Jacket throwers and has an impressive resume of NCAA Qualifiers and All-Americans.  Coach Myers was a participant on the first T&F team at WU and is a former school record holder in the shotput.  Coach Thacker is the throws coach at WU, and helped guide the Jackets to 6 all-conference performances in 2024-2025. Participants will walk through a dynamic warmup, med ball exercises and learn some drills and exercises that can be utilized by all three throwing events.  Cost:  $30 per participant.

July 26    Distance Running Forum

The Waynesburg University XC and T&F staff, along with the help of some colleagues, alumni and friends will provide a free educational forum for all high school, college and recreational runners and coaches.  Topics for this year will include Diet and Hydration, Strength Training, the Differences between D1, D2 and D3 as well as a few sessions on Training Methods.  Cost:  FREE.
