WOOSTER, Ohio. (August 29) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team opened the 2025 season at College of Wooster to face off against the Fighting Scots. Despite two late Waynesburg goals, the Yellow Jackets dropped the contest by a score of 3-2.
Wooster built a 3-0 first half lead with goals in the 25th, 26th and 33rd minutes. The Scots carried that three-goal edge into the half.
The Jackets got on the scoreboard in the 75th minute. Senior
Nick Bryan (Olathe, Kan. / Blue Valley Southwest) attacked left side of the 18-yard box and drew a foul to secure a penalty kick. Freshman John Engal (Dallas, Ga. / East Paulding) took the PK for Waynesburg and picked up his first collegiate goal.
Junior
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic), scored in the 82nd minute with a spectacular header off a corner kick from Engal to trim the margin to a single tally. Waynesburg was unable to put a shot on target to tie the game as Wooster salted the game away.
Freshman
Deven Patel (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) posted a scoreless second half in net with three saves.
Wooster held a 16-9 edge in shots (7-3 SOG) while both teams logged four corner kicks.
The Jackets have a quick turnaround as they travel to Mount Union this Sunday for a 4 p.m. match.
