WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 16) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team erupts for six second half goals the Yellow Jackets cruised past Carlow, 8-1, at John F. Wiley Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Jackets (4-2) got on the board in the third minute as a great centered ball from
John Engel (Dallas, Ga. / East Paulding) bounced off multiple defenders and was pounced on by
Liam Mowbray (Cumberland, Md. / Allegany) for his first goal of the season.
Freshman
Deven Patel (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) had an incredible one-on-one save near the midway point of the first half. A great pass that left the Jacket defense chasing Carlow's Konner Sayre. Patel dashed off his line and made a reaction save.
The Jackets scored again in the 28th minute off a double assist by
Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) and
Michael Kanu (Columbus, Ohio / Tree of Life Christian) following a corner kick to set up Mowbray for his second goal.
Carlow (1-3) responded with a goal that was barely touched by the Carlow offense off a free kick. A slight misdirection in the penalty box led to a Celtics goal in the 30th minute.
Waynesburg carried its 2-1 lead into the half.
In the 49th minute Engel assisted Kanu as he ripped a shot just inside the top left of the 18. It went right over the outstretched arms of the goalie for a highlight reel goal.
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) was dashing left and snuck into the 18 as he was tripped up to set up to take a penalty kick in the 56th minute. The goalie chose the correct side, but Johnson just got it by him for the tally.
Less than a minute later, Kwabiah ripped a shot from the top of the 18 that ricocheted off a Carlow defender high into the air and bounced in before the goalie could get there.
A cheeky flick by
Antonio Baires (San Marcos, Calif. / Calvin Christian) led to
Braden Esbenshade (Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Calvary) powering a goal past the goalie in the 71st minute.
In the 82nd minute
Dane Jones (State College, Pa. / Grace Prep) cashed in with header off a corner kick from
Darren Gamez (Silver Spring, Md. / Quince Orchard).
The Jackets were not done yet as Kanu led
J.P. Groves (Hampstead, Md. / Delone Catholic) down the field and Groves finished with a goal.
The Jackets dominated the stat category, leading 23-6 in shots (12-2 SOG). They had five corners, while Carlow had none.
Mowbray scored twice in the game. Kanu added a goal and two assists while Kwabiah notched a goal and an assist.
