WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 27) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team picked up its first Presidents' Athletic Conference win of 2025 by defeating Bethany 2-0 at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Â
The Yellow Jackets (6-2-1, 1-0-1) got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half, during which they posted just two shots on goal. The Bison (1-5-2, 0-2), on the other hand, had seven shots on goal. Freshman
Deven Patel (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) stopped all seven attempts to keep the scored tied at 0-0.
Â
However, the Jackets were able to find the back of the net on one of those two shots on goal to make it a 1-0 before halftime. Junior
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) was in perfect position for a ball that deflected off a defender just inside the goal area, which he tapped in for the eventual game-winning tally.
Â
The second half was more of the same, but Johnson once again broke through the defense and drew a penalty inside the 18 to set up a penalty kick. The keeper dove right, but Johnson put it in the bottom left corner for the goal, making it a 2-0 game in the 74th minute.
Â
The Jackets were able to hold the Bison offense at bay and Patel finished with 12 saves on the day for yet another clean sheet. The standout rookie has only allowed five total goals over 737 minutes this season, giving him a .601 goals against average and a .878 save percentage.
Bethany led 18-16 in total shots and 12-5 in shots on goal. The two teams tied in corner kicks with eight each.
Â
The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Allegheny for a 3:30 p.m. PAC showdown.
