WAYNESBURG, Pa (September, 3) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team scored a 7-1 victory over Penn State Altoona for the Yellow Jackets' first win of the season at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Junior
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) set Waynesburg's modern-day single-game points record with seven points on three goals and one assist. It was his second collegiate hat trick and the fourth overall in team history.
Jackets scored twice in the first half and exploded for five goals in the second half.
Johnson benefited from a quality feed by freshman
John Engel (Dallas, Ga./ East Paulding) that squeezed past the goalie and defender, which left Johnson wide open for his firth tally in the 16th minute.
The Yellow Jackets then scored their final goal of the first half, which came from junior
Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) beating the Lions' keeper on a penalty kick in the 35th minute.
The Jackets continued their dominance into the second half with Johnson knocking in his second off his heel in the 51st minute, on a grounded cross by Engel.
After recording two assists, Engel got a goal of his own as he powered a shot that deflected off the goalie in the 58th minute.
The Jackets finally conceded their first goal of the game in the 60th minute, but they did not let up as Johnson scored his third and final goal of the game in the 75th minute.
Two minutes later, in the 77th minute, Engel got his second goal of the game in transition from Johnson. The final goal of the game came from senior
Nick Bryan (Olathe, Kan./ Blue Valley Southwest), as he tapped in a feed from the end line by Serrano.
Devn Patel (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) notched his first collegiate win in net for the Jackets. He recorded three saves in the victory.
The Jackets outshot the Nittany Lions 20-7 (15-4 SOG). The Jackets also led 5-2 in corner kicks.
Johnson and Engel each had a role in four goals as Johnson finished with three goal and one assist while Engel had tow goals and two assists. Serrano joined the fun with a goal and an assist.
Waynesburg will travel to Greensburg, Pa., on Saturday to take on Pitt-Greensburg at 2 p.m.
