WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The Waynesburg University men fell behind 4-0 to Point Park and ended up dropping a 5-2 decision to the visiting Pioneers on Tuesday night.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 3-7-1 overall, while it boosted Point Park's record to 2-6-1.
The visitors jumped out to their big lead on a first-perod goal by Mike Carr during the 16th minute of the game. The lead swelled to 2-0 in the early part of the second when Zeke O'Donnell buried a shot past Waynesburg keeper Ryan Hunsberger in the 46th minute.
The game was put out of reach by Point Park's Miguel Alvarez, who scored goals in the 50th and 65th minutes, pushing his team out to a 4-0 advantage.
Waynesburg freshman Erick Burke broke up the shutout in the 67th minute with a ground ball goal that was set up by Ryan Gaudy. Waynesburg's second goal of the night came after a fifth Pioneer goal and was scored by sophomore forward Matt Martin in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Ryan Hartz assisted on the Jackets' final goal of the night.
Hunsberger made five saves on the night, while his counterpart from Point Park, Steve Fabian, blocked four Waynesburg shots en route to the win.
The game got pretty chippy at times as the Pioneers were whistled for 24 fouls, and Waynesburg was called on 12 fouls, including two yellow cards.
The Yellow Jackets will try to end a four-game losing streak on Friday, Oct. 3, when they hit the road to take on Saint Vincent. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
