Men's soccer wins OT thriller

Yellow Jackets defeat W&J for first time in six years

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 19) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team pulled off its biggest win of 2012 under cold, windy and rainy skies at John F. Wiley Stadium. Yellow Jacket junior Tim Fields took a header pass from junior Juan Angel in the third minute of overtime and beat Washington & Jefferson keeper Jon Best for the game-winning goal in a thrilling 2-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) battle on Friday night.

It was the Jackets' (7-7-1, 2-3-1) first victory over the Presidents (5-6-3, 3-2-1) since Oct. 14, 2006, which also came by the score of 2-1. The home team pulled out the win, despite major President advantages in shots (32-to-17) and corner kicks (11-to-three).

After a scoreless first period, the Presidents came out firing in the second, during which they attempted 21 shots to Waynesburg's seven. However, after one Yellow Jacket shot was turned away by Best, sophomore Cody Lemke banged in the first goal of the night during the 71st minute of play. That score looked like it would be enough for Waynesburg to pull out the win as sophomore Brandon Daughtry played a fantastic game in net, making several spectacular saves on the evening. His most memorable stop came when he turned away a penalty kick with a diving stab to his left in the 79th minute of play.

W&J finally beat Daughtry just 56 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 and eventually send it into overtime. During the extra period, the visiting team narrowly missed high on a potential game-winning goal, but less than two minutes later, Fields and Angel hooked up to put the game away and allow a spirited on-field celebration to begin.

While Fields made the biggest play of the night, Daughtry stood tall in goal all night long. The sophomore piled up nine saves on the evening to pick up his seventh win of the season.

The Jackets will look to carry the momentum from Friday night's thrilling victory into their next game, which comes on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Bethany College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
