BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 24) – For a defense-oriented team like Waynesburg, Wednesday's win at Bethany had to feel like an offensive outburst. The Yellow Jacket men's soccer team found the back of the net four on four different occasions and won back-to-back Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contests for the first time this year after downing the Bison 4-2.
The Jackets (8-7-1, 3-3-1) fell behind 2-1 at half time to the home team (5-11-1, 3-4). However, the visitors exploded in the second half for three goals on 17 shots to claim victory. Sophomore
Cody Lemke was the catalyst to the outburst. Still trailing by a goal in the 64
th minute, Lemke took a feed from junior
Adam Roberge and tied the game at 2-2.
Two-and-a-half minutes later, freshman
Victor Browne found the back of the net for the fourth time this season on a goal that was set up by Lemke to move Waynesburg ahead 3-2. During the 77
th minute of play, the Jackets sealed up the victory and, again, it was Lemke who did the honors. The sophomore scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year off an assist from junior
Danny Griebert and with just over 12 minutes left to play, the Jacket defense closed out the win.
Offense was the order of the day, as the two teams combined for 56 shots – 33 for Bethany, 23 for Waynesburg. The second half was played at a truly frenetic pace as the Bison fired off 19 shots, while the Jackets countered with 17 shots, including 13 on net.
Lemke's five-point effort was the biggest scoring output for a Waynesburg player in 2012. Sophomore
Brandon Daughtry settled down after giving up two first-half goals to turn away all nine second-half shots on goal. Sophomore
Ray Melone scored the first goal of the game to give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play. Classmate
James Sneed assisted on the tally.
Waynesburg's four-goal showing was its best offensive performance since the Jackets beat Franciscan 5-0 during the first game of the year. The 2012 regular season comes to an end on Saturday, Oct. 27, when Waynesburg hosts Thomas More for senior night. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
