WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 15) – After playing its last four games on the road, the Waynesburg University men's soccer team made a successful return to John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets got another outstanding performance in goal by sophomore
Brandon Daughtry and just enough offense to pick up a 1-0 victory over visiting Marietta.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net for the entire first half and nearly six minutes of the second half. However, after 50:51 of action, Yellow Jacket sophomore
Nick Brommer scored his first goal of the season, which came off a feed from classmate
James Sneed, to put Waynesburg ahead 1-0. From there, the Jacket defense combined with Daughtry to stifle any opportunities that Marietta had to tie the game.
As previously mentioned, Daughtry, a native of Lower Burrell, Pa., continued an outstanding first season as Waynesburg's starting keeper by making seven saves and notching his second shutout of the season. He is among the leaders in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) in saves per game, save percentage and goals against average.
Even though there was just one goal scored on the evening, it wasn't because of a lack of opportunities as both teams fired 14 shots on the opposing goal. Waynesburg evened up its overall record at 3-3, while the Pioneers fell to 2-4 in 2012. After ending a long span of games on the road with a home win, the Jackets will load the buses again on Wednesday, Sept. 19, when they head to Alliance, Ohio to face the University of Mount Union. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
