LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 1) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team traveled to Latrobe for a Friday afternoon match looking to keep its hopes of a berth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament alive. The Yellow Jackets not only accomplished the feat, but did so in dramatic fashion, earning a hard-fought 3-2 double-overtime victory against the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent (4-14, 2-6) claimed the early advantage by getting on the board in the sixth minute of the contest. Waynesburg (10-4-3, 3-3-2) answered back quickly as junior
Cody Lemke tied the match after an assist of a header from freshman
David Nicholl. The two teams traded goals again late in the first half. Saint Vincent struck in the 39
th minute on a header, before junior
Victor Browne tied the contest off an assist from fellow classmate
Colin Nelson in the 41
st minute.
After the offensive outburst in the first half, both teams went quiet in the second half. Despite numerous opportunities to take a lead, neither team was able to grab a lead and the contest went into overtime. That was when Yellow Jacket senior
Tim Fields gave his team the victory. Fields secured a rebound off a shot attempt and blasted it home for the game-winner in the 108
th minute.
The Jackets got a clutch performance from sophomore goalkeeper
Nathan Ribar, who was filling in for junior
Brandon Daughtry, who left the contest in the 35
th minute. Ribar, a Waynesburg native, stopped 10-of- 11 shots to earn the victory.
The win closes out the regular season for the Jackets, who are now awaiting the result of tomorrow's match between Geneva and Bethany. A Golden Tornado win eliminates the Jackets from PAC tournament contention. Waynesburg would earn a spot in next week's tournament if the Bison beat Geneva. A tie would make things more complicated, but Waynesburg would likely qualifier on a tiebreaker situation.
