Men's soccer rolls past Mount Union

Jackets score five second-half goals in 7-2 win

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 28) - The Waynesburg University men's soccer team combined a stifling defense with a potent, balanced offense on Saturday to defeat the University of Mount Union 7-2.

The Yellow Jackets (5-1-1) opened the scoring in the 11th minute of action when senior Tim Fields collected a rebound and fired it past the Mount Union (5-5) keeper to stake his team to a 1-0 lead. Waynesburg clung to its single-goal advantage until the final minute of the first half. With just 47 seconds to play before halftime, junior Justin Barylski doubled his team's advantage to 2-0.

After a solid showing over the first 45 minutes of play, the Jacket offense exploded in the second period. Waynesburg's lead ballooned to 6-0 before the two teams completed 70 minutes of play, thanks to goals by freshman David Nicholl, junior Colin Nelson, sophomore Victor Browne and senior Anthony MacIntyre.

The Purple Raiders finally broke up the shutout in the 72nd minute of play to make the score 6-1. Nelson's second goal of the game restored a six-goal lead for the home team (7-1), before Mount Union closed the scoring with just 1:41 remaining in the contest.

Junior goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry started the game and gave his team 45 shutout minutes in net, before being relieved by sophomore Waynesburg native Nathan Ribar at halftime. The pair combined for four saves, and Ribar picked up a rare goalie assist on Nelson's second score of the day.

The Jackets out-shot Mount Union by a 26-to-14 margin, while also holding a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Waynesburg will try to keep its winning ways going when it travels to Cincinnati Christian University on Monday. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
