Men's soccer stuns visiting Grove City

Yellow Jackets tie game late in regulation and pull out 2-1 double-overtime win.

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 3) – Just three days after earning a 0-0 draw with a very good Frostburg State team, the Waynesburg University men's soccer team may have outdone itself during Friday night's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener against Grove City. Thanks to another outstanding performance from senior goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry and two dramatic goals, the Yellow Jackets upended the visiting Wolverines 2-1 in double-overtime under driving rain and wind at John F. Wiley Stadium.

The victory marks the second-straight for the Jackets (5-4-3, 1-0) over GCC (5-4-1, 0-1). Prior to last year's historic 1-0 win over the Wolverines, Waynesburg had not bested Grove City since 2002. The Yellow Jackets are unbeaten in their last three games, all of which have gone to overtime.

Things started well for the visiting team, which took a 1-0 advantage thanks to a goal in the 33rd minute of play. Grove City maintained that lead for the next 45 minutes, until senior Nick Brommer took a feed from junior Victor Browne and tied the game up at 1-1 with exactly 11 minutes left to play in regulation time.

After not determining a winner over the first 100 minutes of play, it appeared as though the Yellow Jackets were going to have settle for a fourth tie on the season and their second overall as time was slipping away in the second 10-minute overtime. However, with just 27 seconds remaining, senior Cody Lemke, the PAC's leader in total points coming into the night, set off a raucous on-field celebration when he managed to angle a header past the Wolverine goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the game-winning score during a brief break in the heavy rains.

Waynesburg overcame massive deficits in total shots (31-to-eight) and corner kicks (10-to-three) thanks in large part to Daughtry's work in net. The three-year starter piled up 13 saves, including 12 in regulation, to keep his team in the game until Lemke's dramatic game-winning score.

The Jacket men will look to go to 2-0 in conference play on Saturday, Oct. 11, when they make a road trip to Thiel College to face the Tomcats. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
