(Nov. 16) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team improved to 4-0 on the season by picking up victories against three quality opponents at a quad-match hosted by York College (Pennsylvania) on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets opened the day by downing number-15 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) 19-16 and followed that up with a 19-13 win over the host Spartans. The Jackets wrapped up the day by rolling past Division II Shippensburg 25-11.
Junior
Gordan Bieber started a 3-0 day by gritting out a 5-4 decision that gave Waynesburg an early 3-0 lead over TCNJ (1-3). Sophomore
Filippo Crivelli followed with a solid 4-0 victory at 133 pounds and freshman
DJ Grindle made it three-straight wins by scoring a 1:09 pin for his first collegiate victory. Grindle's fall gave the Jackets a 12-0 lead going into the 149-pound bout.
The Lions didn't go away quietly, as they ripped off a three-weight win streak of their own to trim their deficit down to 12-9. Undefeated senior
Sam Guidi snapped TCNJ's run of victories when he pulled out a tough 2-0 decision at 174 pounds.
Trailing 15-9, New Jersey grabbed its first-and-only lead of the contest (16-15) with back-to-back triumphs at 184 and 197 pounds. However, junior
Greg Kumer answered the call at heavyweight by dominating his opponent to the tune of an 8-0 major decision that pulled out the Jacket win.
Bieber moved to 2-0 after picking up his second decision of the day, this one coming against York (5-1). After the Spartans tied things up with a win at 133, Grindle notched up his first collegiate major decision, this one coming by 12-2 major decision, to put Waynesburg back ahead 7-3.
After a York win at 149 cut the Jacket advantage to 7-6, Waynesburg senior
Luke Lohr got his team back on the winning track with a 12-5 triumph at 157 pounds. Sophomore transfer
Ryan Shank, who was making his Waynesburg debut at York, picked up his first win as a Yellow Jacket, which was an 8-5 decision at 165 pounds that increased the Jacket advantage to 13-6. Waynesburg scored a third-straight decision from Guidi (4-2) to go ahead by 10 points on the match score.
The Spartans made the match a lot more interesting with wins at 184 and 197 pounds to shrink Waynesburg's advantage down to three points (16-13) heading into the 285-pound bout. Once again, Kumer was called upon to seal a dual win, which he did by pulling out a 4-3 triumph.
After a pair of heated battles to open the day, Waynesburg enjoyed a less stressful contest against Shippensburg (0-3), which began with Bieber and Crivelli picking up a win each to give the Jackets a 7-0 lead. The Raiders tied things up with wins at 141 and 149 pounds, but the Jackets were gearing up for a dominant finish to the match and to a full day's work on the mat.
Lohr won his second-straight bout, this one coming by 13-4 major decision to make the score 11-7 Jackets. Freshman
Derek Hull and Guidi followed with wins by decision and major decision, respectively, to expand the advantage to 18-7, before senior
Patrick Jennings ended a four-bout Waynesburg winning streak with a solid 7-1 decision. By the time the 197-pounders came to the mat, the Jackets had already clinched the victory with a 21-7 lead.
Shippensburg picked up its final victory of the day at 197, but Kumer ended the match in style with an 11-2 major decision to bring about the final score of 25-11.
Waynesburg returns to competition on Saturday, Nov. 22, when it faces another quality dual match opponent in the University of Mount Union. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
