Men's soccer plays to 4-4 tie

Goalie Cameron Allen scores rare goal while playing in net

Box Score

DEFIANCE, Ohio (Aug. 30) – For a second-straight game, the Waynesburg University men's soccer team had to settle for a  double-overtime tie after a wild 4-4 contest with Illinois Institute of Technology. The contest was played as part of the Defiance College Gold and Purple Classic.

The Yellow Jackets (0-0-2) opened the scoring just 59 seconds after the opening whistle. Senior Colin Nelson took a feed from sophomore Brio Davis and buried the ball in the back of the net to put Waynesburg up 1-0.

Unfortunately, Nelson's goal marked the last time the Orange and Black held the lead, as Illinois Tech scored the next three goals, with the last coming during the 25th minute of play. Trailing 3-1, the Jackets showed their mettle by tying the game up at 3-3 shortly after the start of the second half.

Waynesburg's second goal of the day came in a most unexpected fashion from a most unexpected source. Junior goalkeeper Cameron Allen scored his team's second goal of the contest after a strong Ohio wind grabbed hold of one of his punts and lofted it over the outstretched hands of his net counterpart in the 37th minute to cut the Jacket deficit to 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets' comeback was completed two minutes into the second half when Davis posted a goal of his own to tie the score at 3-3. Illinois Tech regained the lead at 4-3 with a tally in the 70th minute, but Waynesburg had one last comeback up its sleeve. With less than three minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore Joey Buchanan took a feed from senior Ray Melone and brought about the final score of 4-4.

Waynesburg held on for the tie, despite being out-shot 4-1 over the two overtime periods. Illinois Tech also held a 21-to-eight advantage in overall shot attempts.

Allen got the start in net and allowed three goals over 45 minutes of action to go along with his own tally. Senior Brandon Daughtry stopped three-of-four shots on goal during the final 65 minutes of play.

Waynesburg gets back to competition on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when it hosts Franciscan University. Start time is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
