Men's soccer battles La Roche

Yellow Jackets taste defeat for the first time in 2014

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 6) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team dropped its first match of the season with a 1-0 loss to La Roche College on Saturday.

The first half between the two teams was well matched as the two squads entered the locker room with a scoreless draw. Both teams started out the second half with more close play before La Roche (3-1) scored the first and only goal of the game with seven minutes remaining in regulation as Mike Svanidze put it past Yellow Jacket (1-1-2) goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry. The goal came off a Red Hawk throw in that bounced around inside of the penalty box.

Waynesburg had a chance to tie it in the closing minutes of regulation as a James Sneed pass to Zach Benedict went just wide.  Senior goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry got the start in net and made three saves over 90 minutes of play.

Waynesburg suffered the loss despite out-shooting the Redhawks by a 24-to-14 margin. The Yellow Jackets also put 10 shots on goal, all of which were turned away by the La Roche keeper.

The Jackets return to the pitch Tuesday night against Point Park. Kick off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.at John F. Wiley Stadium.
