Box Score 2 LEE COUNTY, Fla. (March 5) – The Waynesburg University softball team posted a pair of wins against teams with winning records during Monday' action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Yellow Jackets defeated Clark 8-2 before handing Kenyon its first loss of the season in a thrilling 3-2 triumph.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning of the early contest, Waynesburg (4-0) roared back with a four-spot in the third to build a lead it never relinquished. The Jackets padded their advantage with two scores in the fifth and closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Four different Jackets recorded two hits each in the victory over Clark (3-2), including junior first baseman
Alex Lawrence, who also doubled, scored three runs and drove in another. Freshman
Tara Staley logged a pair of knocks and recorded a team-best two RBI.
The freshman duo of
Emma Kubalak and
Miranda Bowers combined to allow just four hits in the circle. Kubalak started and got the win after working four innings. Bowers struck out four over three innings of relief.
Junior ace
Courtney Messenger improved to 2-0 and led the Jackets to their most impressive win of the spring break trip. Kenyon came into the game a perfect 5-0, but the former second-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) righty held the Ladies to just two runs on four hits and two walks over a seven-inning complete game.
After a scoreless first inning, Lawrence led off the second by reaching on an error. Two batters later, she scored from second on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman
Ashley Dubovich.
The Jackets doubled their advantage in the second. Freshman right fielder
Marlee Ott drew a two-out walk and was singled home in the next at-bat by sophomore third baseman
Cheyenne Wasko to make the score 2-0.
After Kenyon tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, the Jackets used three-straight singles to produce the deciding tally in the top of the sixth. Staley led off with a single and was followed in kind by sophomore catcher
Rachel Skon. Dubovich collected her game-high third hit to drive home Staley.
Messenger kept victory within reach by not allowing a hit in the final three innings. She also retired the first nine Kenyon batters that came to the plate.
The Jackets will try to keep their winning ways going on Wednesday with games against Elms and Penn State Altoona at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
