NEW CONCORD, Ohio (Sept. 12) – Back on Aug. 31, the Waynesburg University men's soccer team was done in by a pair of penalty kicks in a 3-1 season-opening loss to Franciscan. The shoe was on the other foot Wednesday night, when the Yellow Jackets cashed in a PK of their own in double-overtime to snatch a 4-3 win over Muskingum.
During the second minute of the second overtime period, junior
Nate Kummer was fouled inside the 18-yard box to allow the chance to end the contest. Kummer cashed in by going to the lower right-hand portion of the net for the game-deciding point. The score ended Waynesburg's (2-3) two-game losing streak. It was the team's third-straight contest in the Buckeye State.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the eighth minute of regulation when junior
Justin Buberl took a pass from junior
Andrew Heft and gave his team a 1-0 advantage. Muskingum (1-4) answered back in a big way with a pair of goals over the next 11 minutes.
The high-scoring first half continued when senior
Tyler Sisler tied the score at 2-2 in 28
th minute. Kummer set up the game-tying tally. Muskingum regained the lead 4:31 before halftime and took its 3-2 advantage into the break.
The Jackets were still dealing with their one-goal deficit into the 82
nd minute when Buberl completed his first multi-goal game of the season. Sisler set up the game-tying score with 7:40 remaining in regulation.
Despite the narrow margin of victory, Waynesburg held sizeable advantages in total shots (30-12) and shots on goal (14-7). The visiting team also attempted 13 corner kicks, while Muskingum got four tries from the corner flags. The Muskies were also nailed for 20 fouls, while the Jackets were whistled seven times.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they travel to Mount Aloysius. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
