Waynesburg, Pa. (May 12) - For the second time in four days, the Yellow Jackets are national champions. The Rocket League team defeated Tarleton State 4-1 to win the NECC Division V national championship.
The Jackets won the best of seven years in decisive fashion with three shutout wins in the series. Game one saw the Jackets score three goals while keeping the Texans to zero. Strong offensive play from captain
AJ Smolen and excellent defensive play and assist from
Bobby Ballentyne and
Noah Westover kept the Jackets in the driver's seat through all five minutes of game one. The second game was a repeat of game one. The Jackets won 2-0 on the same smothering offensive and oppresive defensive play. Game three was the sole win for Tarleton State. They got out to a quick lead and beat the Jackets 5-2 to take their only win of the match. Game four was the pivotal game of the series with the Jackets winning 16 second into overtime off an
AJ Smolen goal. The fifth and final game of the series was another shutout performance (2-0)Â from the Jackets to close out the series 4-1 and secure the esports team second national title in just four days. The Overwatch team won their national title game on Friday (5/8) beating East Central University 4-1 as well.Â
The Jackets closed out the 2024-2025 season with an impressive set of wins and conferenece and national titles. The team finished the fall season with a 44-43-1 record and brought home the Division East conference title in Rocket League. The spring semester saw the team produce a 49-21 record with two national titles - Rocket League and Overwatch.Â
The team is now done with competition for the year and is looking forward to the start of the Fall 2025 season September.
