Waynesburg, Pa (April 28) - For the second year in a row, the esports team has advanced to a national championship game. The #10 Smash Bros. team will play #8 Southwestern Minnesota State for the NECC Division VIII National Championship.
After a very long season that started the first week of February, the Smash Bros. team will play for a national championship the week of May 4th. The team advanced to the game after beating Fresno Pacific 2-0 in their match tonight. Sophomore
Cash Wieczorek started off the team strong by taking 11 of the first 12 stocks. Sophomore
Aaron Beard took the last stock and put the team up 1-0. In game two, the team started with sophomore
Jack Hood took two stocks and passed the baton to senior
Alex Solomon. He took the next five stocks with Wieczorek stepping in to secure the last five stocks and punching the team's ticket to the championship game.
The Jackets have won all of their national championship tournament games by shutout tallying wins over #7 Hendrix in the first round, #2 East Central in the quarterfinals, and finally #11 Fresno Pacific in the semifinals. SWMS had a similar path to the finals securing wins over #9 Marywood (2-1), #16 Alaska Fairbanks (2-1), and #4 Kansas State (2-0).
The date and time for the national championship game is currently being negotiated between Waynesburg and Southwest Minnesota State. An update will be provided once the date/time have been agreed upon.
The national championship game will be streamed live on twitch.tv/TheEsportCompany and the Esports Arena will be open to those who would like to watch it live.
