WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 28) – The Waynesburg women's lacrosse team rolled over an opponent for a second-straight game on Saturday, as they downed Lancaster Bible College 17-5 in front of the crowd gathered at John F. Wiley Stadium.
The victory set several records for the program, including the most goals scored in a game, the largest lead in program history (14-1) and, despite being just three games into the season, the Jackets have already scored more goals this year than they did in their inaugural season of 2008 (33 to 23).
The win also gives the Jackets their first multi-game winning streak and gives them a record over .500 (2-1) for the first time. The Chargers dropped to 2-7 on the year.
Unlike their previous win over Wilson College, which came this past Wednesday, things didn't start well for the Jackets, as they fell behind 1-0 after LBC's Kirsten Gnagy put one past Waynesburg goalkeeper Amanda Jo Morgan on a free shot to put her team up 1-0.
However, following that goal, the Jackets went on the longest scoring run in program history as they rifled a whopping 14 unanswered goals past Chargers keeper Kayla Maynard, 13 of which came before the end of the first half.
The second half of the contest was actually very evenly played as both teams put up four goals a piece to bring about the final score.
Head coach Chay Lahew had to be pleased with the balance displayed in Waynesburg's offensive attack, as seven different Jackets put a shot in the net, six of which scored multiple goals.
Freshman attacker Miranda Thornton led the assault with a game-high four goals, while sophomore Maria Shepas and senior Steph Strauser added a hat trick each. Rounding out the group of multi-goal scorers were freshman Megan Carberry, junior Heather Quinlisk and sophomore Caitlin Malay.
After giving up the game's first goal, Morgan didn't let another ball past her until the middle of the second half. She stopped a season-high 11 shots to pick up her second-straight victory in net.
As a team, the Jackets held a huge advantage in shots (41 to 21) and took advantage of two extra-player opportunities with five goals.
Waynesburg will go for three-in-a-row on Thursday, April 2, when they travel to Hood College. The game is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
